Do The Drawings WHERE ??

In all these many years of live drawing at fun events I have seen some interesting, unique concepts for various gatherings. On one occasion the hosts had maybe six artists including me, drawing outdoors in the blazing, broiling sun. No tents, no shade, no whining. Wanna get paid? Get out there! And we did. Anything for a buck, eh? It was awful, the sun on the paper and the sheer heat and humidity were daunting. At another, I was instructed to sit on the basketball court — against the wall behind the hoop. Where the kids would dribble and take shots at the hoop! Yow! I whined the host into… Read More

Wedding Venue BAD Choices

WEDDING VENUE, How To CHOOSE?? One of the major headaches for some couples planning their big day is going over the wedding venue choices. Where we gonna do this anyhow?? There are a LOT of factors required to be in that mix, so let’s try to list some of the most important ones to help your decision-making along. This is not a small thing, since the wedding overall is likely to cost $29,000-$31,000 on average, according to Wedding Stats.  Weddings are now a $48 billion industry (yes!), so obviously getting married is quite an investment on every level. But for now, let us focus on choosing the right place to… Read More

Schedule THIS, Too!

A BIT OF ADVICE: Don’t WORK so hard, friends! We are going to get through this awful, awful year and roar back into real life very soon. Really, we will. Not soon enough, I admit. But, hey, try to RELAX a bit, please, please. Calm down, okay? I think we are all wound a bit tight these days (for sure I am) and we really must dial it down a notch and try to have a laugh. Okay? Just schedule your down time, and meditate, or nap, or just zone out and watch the clouds drift by with your favorite beverage and a snack. Okay? Let’s all put THIS on… Read More

An Interview with WHO??

Recently I was invited to discuss the caricature business with Jean Neuhart of Weddings From The Heart. Having admired her posts on Linkedin for some time, that was way flattering. The interview was just published and predictably enough, she did a terrific job. Thank you, Jeannie! Here’s the link, gang: Dennis Porter interview

Let’s Do It AGAIN!

I was invited to draw at a wedding reception for a terrific young couple, Brandi & Seth, back in 2006. Just sketch a couple of hours, gonna be fun. Sure! And it was, too, but… more and more relatives kept stopping by. And the time kept extending… And extending… And extending… — And through it all I had a fabulous time, because the crowd was so upbeat. Lots and lots of bad jokes and family giving other family a hard time. Mucho, mucho laughs on all sides. It was hilarious! There was just tremendous energy, as at most weddings, but this one was exceptional — and suddenly I realized that… Read More

These adorable weirdos asked to be drawn as dinosaurs, SO… Anyway, it was  a super event, lots of fun and I look forward to the next reception. Maybe yours??

Fun Wedding Entertainment

This time of year I am flattered to be invited to draw at a LOT of weddings, usually at the reception following the ceremony, of course… These are always fabulously neat events, with the bride and groom starting out their lives together with a huge public event their friends and family will likely talk about for years. The energy is wonderful, charged with hope and promise and love and respect for all concerned. The live quick-sketching is always fun wedding entertainment, absolutely. Here’s a cute young couple at a very recent event… Notice the imprint at bottom of the sketch pad. I and my old pal John drew at this event and… Read More
