Do The Drawings WHERE ??

In all these many years of live drawing at fun events I have seen some interesting, unique concepts for various gatherings. On one occasion the hosts had maybe six artists including me, drawing outdoors in the blazing, broiling sun. No tents, no shade, no whining. Wanna get paid? Get out there! And we did. Anything for a buck, eh? It was awful, the sun on the paper and the sheer heat and humidity were daunting. At another, I was instructed to sit on the basketball court — against the wall behind the hoop. Where the kids would dribble and take shots at the hoop! Yow! I whined the host into… Read More

Drawing Live as Party Entertainment

THE CALLS ARE COMING BACK  — And I can not TELL you how happy that makes me! What a gig — drawing live as party entertainment! Not just for the income, now,  but even more because it is just a blast to go to the various events — parties, wedding receptions, conventions, trade shows, company picnics — and DRAW everybody! Yow! These photos popped up from a previous time frame, before Covid, before politics were quite so toxic and loathsome, when we were pretty much in normal life. And it was a fun event, too, as was most of routine life back then. Times change, eh? Sad to say. I… Read More

Trade Show Fun

Recently I had the pleasure of sketching at a trade show just north of Cincinnati. A super group, everyone was happy to be there and enjoying the conversation and endless activities at hand. One of the many drawings I did that night was this one, two gentleman from out of town. I hope they had time to visit and enjoy Cincy — one of the greatest American cities, absolutely.

Wedding Venue BAD Choices

WEDDING VENUE, How To CHOOSE?? One of the major headaches for some couples planning their big day is going over the wedding venue choices. Where we gonna do this anyhow?? There are a LOT of factors required to be in that mix, so let’s try to list some of the most important ones to help your decision-making along. This is not a small thing, since the wedding overall is likely to cost $29,000-$31,000 on average, according to Wedding Stats.  Weddings are now a $48 billion industry (yes!), so obviously getting married is quite an investment on every level. But for now, let us focus on choosing the right place to… Read More

Get It With No Money

An Alternative To Cash Previous version posted Nov 2020 —   I have been doing this caricature live-drawing thing for a bit more than forty years now (Yow! Old guy!) and one of the unexpected BENEFITS has turned out to be — Barter. Yes! Trading my drawings for actual goods and services, for lots and lots of things I needed at the time — and was way, way too broke to pay for those items. We have all heard of the classic Starving Artist, right? Hey, some of us have lived that life, kids.   I have a story on that point you will not believe. It happened to me;… Read More

Heartbreaker Call Back

A letter we received today from a former client was flattering, kind and lucrative. And broke our hearts. I drew at an event at this sweet lady’s home north of here, way back in December of 1986. And apparently did well. She said lovely things in today’s letter about that evening and how glad she was to find my info online recently. And now wishes to book me for October 30 for her birthday, a big number, too.  But this is a birthday party — which may not take place. She wrote, “Hopefully I will still be here…”   Leukemia, very aggressive, recent diagnosis. No symptoms yet. Sitting at my desk,… Read More

Got that Remote Choice??

The OFFICE option — your choice?? As we all know, this last eighteen months or so have been brutal on so many levels. Huge numbers of our colleagues have seen their jobs go away forever, and scores of businesses went under. Sad and tragic. One of the extremely few upsides to the relentless awful news has been the rise of the Remote Office. And now a new wrinkle or two has evolved. More than one business has found itself struggling to fill jobs and thus working to keep its staffers happy – and offering them the option of continuing to work at home. A professional man we know has received… Read More

Fifth Grade is AWESOME!

I was recently contacted by Mr. Fleming, a fifth grade teacher in South Carolina who wished to have a graphic made — a BIG one that would fit on his classroom door. He has taught the same group since third grade, if I understood correctly, and works hard to encourage and stay connected with the students. Art supplies took a bit of extra effort, finding paper large enough that would take some watercolor (and be affordable) and be rolled up for mailing. And colors that would not require water saturation, just enough to fill in fairly consistently. That allowed me to take the budget down to a level he could… Read More
