“I need a drawing of my GROUP, together,” she said.
Well, hey, no problem.
I find I can draw quite a few people on one 11 x 14 inch sheet, and still get a decent resemblance. That’s in the studio, where I can take as much time as needed.
Here is a sample of a studio team drawing, like the one discussed back in April —
TEAMS DRAWN LIVE:
Possible but tiring
Drawing live can also be done but it’s exhausting for the team.
The problem is they must all stay IN PLACE the whole time, which drives the group nuts with boredom. The process is actually very fast, considering the number of people drawn — they likely average two to three minutes a person — but even ten people could take twenty to thirty minutes, obviously.
“Please — stay where you are!”
So what’s with the standing in place bit??
It’s like this — I have to draw the face and then leave off the outline of the head for a while, until the others nearby are drawn. Then, and ONLY then I can fit the two together for best effect. If the person above needs the space for their chin, it better be there. It will come out looking like they are leaning over the person below and will seem okay. That chin is needed for resemblance; the outline of the other guy’s hair is needed less.
I hope that makes sense.
OTHER JOBS:
One unusual request recently was for a “Beach Guy.”
And it has to be tonight! Need it now!
No resemblance to anyone, just a fellow on a beach. This came on an email from a nice fellow; after some phone discussion I did up a quick pencil layout and emailed it over. A very quick followup and I was able to do up final ink and get it sent.
Here that item is as well —
And the client was happy, so all is well.
More blogging on the oddball caricature life soon!
Email me if you have any questions.
